Footbridge causes massive disruption

On the 12th of October, Network Rail are trying to get planning permission to produce a footbridge in north Yorkshire. Network Rail will receive uproar of complaints from disabled people and their communities as it goes against the Equality Act. The footbridge will be made from steps which defeats the purpose of being all inclusive. Ultimately, if permission is granted then it stops people with certain disabilities from using trains altogether.

More accurate inclusion needed in films

Within the small selection of disabled characters in films and television, they are almost always portrayed as a helpless object of pity or sympathy. This negative representation of disabled people reflects on how some people in society can still be incredibly narrow minded regarding the topic of disability. Within the last 30 years, characters such as Forrest Gump and Rain Man, while intended to be endearing, are often viewed by people in the disabled community as insulting or inappropriate.

Disability hate crimes on the rise

The Home Office have announced a shocking spike in the number of disability-related hate crimes in England and Wales from March 2021 to March 2022. The figure rose by 43% compared to the previous year to a total of 14,242 reported cases. The Home Office attributes the rise in reported cases to improvements in crime recording by the police.

Coronation Street is for everybody

On the 9th of December 1960, Coronation Street aired its first episode on ITV thanks to Granada Television and writer Tony Warren. Warren wanted to explore “the driving forces behind life in a working-class street in the north of England”. There have been fascinating responses to the show from left wing critics saying that it doesn’t represent working class people even though the show reached up to 20 million viewers from all backgrounds with the show up until this day.

Exclusive vintage clothes sale

On the 28th of October, Worth The Weight Vintage will be having a vintage clothes sale at the custard factory in Birmingham. The clothing company will be bringing all their fashion to the West Midlands as it will be open from 11am until 5pm. Everybody is welcome whether you want to feel nostalgic or look trendy. The staff will be restocking the rails throughout the day. The clothes are sold by the kilogram, and large crowds are expected to attend.

300 word news story – Disability

Exercise put smiles on disabled people’s faces.

Disabled adults should have started exercise when they were younger to potentially have seen better lifelong results.

Exercise is a valuable aspect of everybody’s life because being physically active can improve your brain health, help manage weight and help to strengthen your muscles. People with disabilities will struggle to operate certain machines in the gym, for example, depending on their circumstances. Physical activity can also improve mental health by reducing depression and anxiety. Sarah Lilly from Cerebral Palsy Midlands said, “It is really important for disabled people to keep moving their muscles as a prevention method because that will help your health and wellbeing”. There are loads of helpful options out there that can support you if needed like seeking professional advice from doctors or gym staff who can teach you what you need to know before you start. However, if you not as confident to start at the gym straight away, then there are plenty of other activities to do instead as doing something is better than nothing. Then you can try and slowly increase the amount of time or activities that you complete. One support system would be to join certain charities that match the person’s needs because they will not feel alone while exercising. This is also a good representation of the people around you because you will be exercising with people of a similar skill set. People with physical disabilities are constantly told when they were younger by doctors to complete regular exercise as it could have major benefits towards their health in the future. These charities are a fantastic place to visit because they provide disabled people with any extra support they might need to live a happy and healthy life.

Social Media Campaign – Cerebral Palsy Awareness

Three Social Media posts:

Disability:

What is Cerebral Palsy? (The main cause)

Cerebral Palsy is the most common motor disability in childhood. Cerebral means something to do with the brain and Palsy means weakness or problems with the person’s muscles. CP is caused by abnormal brain development or damage to the person’s developing brain that affects somebodies ability to use his or her muscles.

The Symptoms:

The symptoms of cerebral palsy vary’s from person to person. A person with serve CP might need special equipment to help with walking or might not be able to walk at all which requires lifelong care. A person with mild CP on the other hand can walk but it might look slightly awkward, but they will not need any special help.

Spastic CP:

Spastic CP is the most common type of cerebral palsy which affect 80% of people with this disability. People with this spastic CP have increased muscle tone meaning that their muscles become stiff and as a result their movement will look awkward. In this type of CP, the stiffness is usually in the legs with the arms less affected.

People with spastic diplegia might have difficulty walking because tight hip and leg muscles cause their legs to pull together, turn inward, and cross at the knees. This type of CP affects only one side of a person’s body which the arm is usually more affected than the leg.

Doctors and Physio’s

People with cerebral Palsy will have constant doctor and physio appointments throughout there life working towards possibly finding the best way to make your life slightly easier through exercises. People with Cerebral Palsy will most likely will have to Botox injections throughout their life to loosen up their muscles for about six months. Botox injections are a lot of trail and error before having an operation either on the person’s arm or leg. Having major surgery is a big decision for everybody but for people with Cerebral Palsy it could be slightly more daunting because there is the risk of it not going according to plan which could affect the person’s confidence as an operation on a person’s arm could be permeant.

TikTok (Video based speaking into camera with pics as a cutaway)

  • Potentially interviewing and recording videos at Cerebral Palsy Midlands which is a day service for people to use. This allows people to come together to create a safe enivronment to complete activities, create music, make videos for social media and watch tv shows and films.
  • I could potentially create three 1 minute short form TikTok videos including a voice over explaining what type of activities they provide, what equipment people can use.

Questions I could ask?

Staff members:

TikTok Video 1:

What is the theme of this years cerebral palsy day?

How do you celebrate cerebral palsy day?

How to show your support during cerebral palsy awareness month?

TikTok Video 2:

What kind of brain damage causes cerebral palsy?

Can you explain the early signs of cerebral palsy?

Can a child outgrow cerebral palsy?

TikTok Video 3:

How can people with cerebral palsy live a happy and healthy life?

How can physical activity help people with cerebral palsy?

What equipment can help support people with cerebral palsy?

Other Possible Questions:

What was the message behind the musical video everybody made “Tea with two sugars”?

Was the video a good way to help the people to express themselves?

How do you feel about mean comments?

Questions for the citizens:

What are your favourite activities?

What do you enjoy the most about the activities?

Are you apart of the rock band?

What instrument do you play?

What is the wheelchair dance?

Do you like wheelchair dancing?

Who is your favourite Doctor?

Are you looking forward to the new series?

Full Cerebral Palsy Interview With Sarah Lilly

This is my full cerebral palsy interview with cerebral palsy which I can use for some of my TikTok videos. In this interview I asked about ten questions and I am planning to use three questions for three of my TikTok videos as I have created a lot of footage while visiting the cerebral palsy midlands center.

Full Cerebral Palsy Midlands Citizens Interview

On this interview I spoke to a few of the cerebral palsy citizens. A few of the questions I asked where about what cerebral palsy is and about why the cerebral palsy midlands center is so important to them. I have learnt a lot of information on what activities the center put on for all the citizens. I really enjoyed my experience at the cerebral palsy midlands center because all the staff members do great work to help support and care for the citizens which has created a happy and safe enirnoment for everybody to express themselves.

UN Poster

For my UN poster I have chosen number four quality education because I wanted to promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. Education is the key that will allow many other Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved. When people are able to get quality education they can break from the cycle of poverty. Education helps to reduce inequalities and to reach gender equality. It also empowers people everywhere to live more healthy and sustainable lives. Education is also crucial to fostering tolerance between people and contributes to more peaceful societies.

These are a few posters that I could use as an example to help build my UN poster off. I really how simple but effective the message is along with the image of a child holding a pencil to help reinforce the meaning. The quote of education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world is such a fantastic message to get across to people. The colour scheme of red and green compliments each other so well. I think the second poster is defiantly the opposite of the first one because it has alot for to it including way more text and images. I really like the layout of the poster with the main image at the top of the poster alongside the text at the bottom. However, I think the best looking posters are the most simple with little to no text because I think it would be good to have the picture as the main message.

I think I want the purpose of my poster to be about telling children to make the most of there education by having fun with there learning. When children play educational games they will learn a lot faster as they will be enjoying themselves. There are multiple learning games that kids can enjoy that teach different things. There are classic games like chess and Jenga that can teach critical thinking skills and patients for example. My target audience would be children because I want them to think of learning as a fun and exciting experience rather than something that they have to do. I also wanted the message to be about how children shouldn’t waste there chance to learn as some children do not have the same resources provided to them. I want my colour scheme to follow only three or four colours because I don’t want to overwhelm my target audience with multiple colours all at once. I also think having a colour scheme will engage the audiences attention better and won’t lose focus of the message I am trying to achieve. For the size and font I want to of course have the title bigger than the sub headings and slogans because that is what will catch the viewer’s eye straight away. I was thinking of including two subheadings on the left and the main message at the both of the page because that will help space out all the important information.
