England Rugby Captain Swaps Red Roses for Coventry Gown

Rugby star Zoe Stratford in Coventry Cathedral minutes after receiving her award!
England Rugby World Cup winner Zoe Stratford has received an honorary doctorate from Coventry University in the field of sport. An amazing belated birthday present for the England Lock, who turned 29 the day before. The Red Roses captain is a highly regarded player in the world of rugby, and this honorary doctorate adds another jewel to her crown.
Zoe Stratford’s glowing smile was beaming throughout the graduation as she received the doctorate. “I am hugely honored to receive this doctorate. I have been playing rugby for quite a while now, so it is just incredible to celebrate all the students graduating as well.”
Stratford’s parents accompanied her during the ceremony at Coventry Cathedral and looked delighted as she took her place amongst the academics. After captaining England to win the World Cup, the Rugby star has written her name in the hall of fame twice in one year.
Stratford’s Rugby Career
Once the graduation had finished, Stratford gave some inspiring words to Coventry University’s women’s rugby team. The group aged 18 to 23 were left speechless after meeting one of their sporting idols, and were so excited to ask all their burning questions. The assembled group noted that they had all picked up tips to improve their games during their grilling of Stratford.

Zoe Stratford’s international career with England Women has been marked by consistent performance and leadership, and she quickly became a central figure in the squad after making her debut in 2016. She was appointed captain of the Red Roses in 2025, taking over from Marlie Packer.
The England captain is known for her notorious celebrations, especially after winning the World Cup. The Red Roses star has played a major part in raising the profile of Women’s Rugby in England. A record attendance was broken during a Women’s rugby match at 81,885 people. This was a monumental moment for the game, as this number is well over what was seen three years ago.
After asking about the most defining moment of her career, Zoe said
“I think I would be silly not to say the World Cup final was the most memorable, not just for the occasion, but for getting off the bus and seeing stands lined with people was an incredible sight to see.”
Talking about the atmosphere around the stadium she went on to say
“It gave me goosebumps in that moment coming off the field, and then to have 82,000 fans in the stadium was unbelievable, and to get the win, I honestly never had a feeling like it before.”
Zoe Stratford is a real leader on and off the pitch, and you can see the dedication she puts into everything the Red Roses star does. England Women’s Rugby seems to be in safe hands with her as captain. Let’s see if the game can continue to grow for the next World Cup.
