Volleyball Commentary
Coventry Volleyball M1 vs Anglia Ruskin M1
This is the first sports commentary game I have been involved in and I really enjoyed myself because commentary brings my love of sports together with an aspect of journalism that is new to me. When I first heard about these opportunities I jumped at the chance to be apart of it because I knew it would take me out of my comfort zone and help with my radio based work on my assessments. I also feel like I have a very softly spoken voice on videos and recordings so I wanted to build upon that by trying to get more confidence. One problem I faced was how I struggled to pronounce a few players names and stuttered a lot. However, there was one funny moment where I called the opposition team Angelo Saxons instead of Anglia Ruskins but it only happened three times.
Coventry Netball W1 vs Oxford W2
This is my second ever sports commentary game which was Coventry Netball W1 vs Oxford W2 on 25/10/2023. At this point the first livestream went really well and we all decided to try and commentate one game a week as long as we aren’t all busy with our assignments. I went into this commentary without ever watching a netball game before and only knowing a few key terms on how to describe what was happening. Overall, I would like to think the livestream was a success as we reached up to 22 viewers at one point in the stream will a few comments all cheering on Coventry to win. Unfortunately they didn’t which might have brought down my tone as I feel like I have been slightly biased towards Coventry.
Coventry Volleyball W1 vs BCU W1
This was my third sports commentary game which was Coventry Volleyball W1 vs Birmingham City W1 on the 01/11/2023. I really enjoyed this livestream because we tried to add more elements into the stream such as using music at the start of the warm ups as there was a twenty minute delay and during the 2nd set for a few minutes. We have also included time stamps so if anybody is watching a few days later then they can skip to anywhere they want. One idea I have had is where we could potentially include a commentators camera at the start, middle and end of each livestream for a few minutes at a time.
Coventry Flames WBB vs Liverpool
On Saturday 4th November I was apart of a basketball double header event as Coventry Flames Women’s team took on Liverpool. Unfortunately, they lost the match 46-49 but that didn’t take away from the experience. Out of all the commentary livestreams I have done so far I was mostly looking forward to doing this because Basketball is one of my favourite sports and the games didn’t disappoint.
Coventry Flames MBB vs Loughborough Riders
This was the second basketball game of the afternoon where Coventry flames failed to impress after losing by a massive scoreline of 30 points. There were a few players who had a decent game but on the whole it was a really disappointing game for the first one I watched. On a technical side of things we were missing a camera operator for this game because there was only two of us instead of the usual three so we had to multi task by commentating and moving the camera each quarter.
Coventry Basketball M1 vs Derby M1
The Coventry’s mens team lost against Derby 108-81 which was a lot closer game than the other one last week. This was an unlucky game as there was definitely opportunities for Coventry to win this game but they just couldn’t make the baskets count. There was a lot of problems with this stream as this was the first one we set up ourselves on obs and one thing which made it more difficult was noting having a camera operator because it meant that one of us had to focus on the camera leaving the commentator to speak to themselves.
Coventry Volleyball W1 vs Worcester W1
This was a very good and quick game to watch because was the second sports game I saw Coventry win. The volleyball game only lasted one hour after Coventry very easily dominated the game due to Worcester having a very unexperienced team after some of there player graduating. We had a lot of comments which is where we received all of this information from. Hopefully the game next week can go in Coventry’s favour once again.
Coventry Volleyball M1 vs Leicester M1
BUCS is back! The new year is upon us, with the first game day ending with a victory for Coventry men’s volleyball. Coventry’s men’s team managed to beat Leicester 3-1. Even though the scoreline is unflattering from a Leicester perspective, they put up a fantastic fight and showed real determination until the end. However, Coventry had the edge over them once the points hit the 20 mark, it was pretty much game over from there.

Coventry Volleyball W1 vs East Anglia W1
Week 2 saw us commentate on the women’s 1 volleyball game against East Anglia!
Even though I felt like I’m getting back into the rhythm of commentating the same can’t be said for Sport Coventry after losing 0-3 to East Anglia. The women’s volleyball team had a lot of new faces this year so give it a few games and they will be back to there best.

Coventry Football M1 vs Anglia Ruskin M1
During week 3, we commentated on our first football game between Coventry M1 vs Anglia Ruskin M1. This was a great cup game for Coventry after beating their opposition 4-1. ⚽ ✅
Coventry got off to a rocky start after going a goal down but bounced back to 2-1 just before halftime. That gave Coventry a platform to go and continue to build that momentum and win by a dominant scoreline.
There was a huge celebration at the end of the game, and I interviewed two of the key players, which you can check out on the Sport Coventry Instagram page! Link to the live stream below…

Coventry Hockey M1 vs Lincoln M1
This week saw Matt and I commentate on our first ever Hockey game, which was an eventful one!🏑 ✅
In this game, Coventry M1 lost 6-1 to Lincoln M1, where the opposition was the dominant side. Lincoln was fantastic in finding open space on either side of the pitch and then would cross the ball into the box for an easy finish. Coventry was unfortunate because they just weren’t good enough in the final third. One positive was the commentary because we didn’t have any technical difficulties, and I enjoyed learning about the mechanics of setting up a live stream.

Coventry Volleyball W1 vs Loughborough W1
This week saw us commentate on the Women 1’s volleyball game against Loughborough.
This game started off quite well for Coventry after getting a few early points on board. However, Loughborough quickly grew back into the game and won the first couple of sets. This allowed them to ease off a little bit which put even more pressure on Coventry to get back into the game as they were one set away from losing.
Nevertheless, with only two weeks left of BUCS watch the latest livestream to see how the Women got on during the match…
